This gospel reflection is based on Matthew 5:17-37.
Truth at Heart
This prophet, this carpenter’s son This man from lowly Nazareth This prophet Yesua of whom all speak Who with words which bless our ears Makes all clear and teaches truth
This Son of David, this preacher This miracle worker from Galilee This carpenter’s son of whom John spoke Who is a wondrous teacher and prophet Shows us the meaning of Law
Our hearts burn as we hear him So clearly teaching the core of all truth That God wants us not just in obedience But in faithfulness to his love Not just in the signs of the written law
Our minds are shown such clarity When he speaks of how we treat each other Acting not just as the law requires But from the depths of our heart As brother and sister above all
He comes not to remove the law But to clarify the love of the Father Teaching us how to reflect this love in life In how we act and live and judge Understanding the letter in its full meaning
That we should follow the law Not because of its detail and severity But because of its deepest meaning To come through life’s difficulty and pain That of fulfilling God’s desire for us
That all live and love and come to him One by one and one with another Overcoming earthly darkness and doubt By finding and following truth in him alone And live the law of love and heart
Dear Jesus, help me to live in the light of your love By not just checking off the letters of your law But by always seeking peace of heart By always acting in truth and selflessness And by understanding and living The truth of your righteousness
